Dabei war von Anfang an klar, dass der Sinn dieser Beobachtungsart in der Verbindung der Beobachtung von außen mit der durch Introspektion war, wie folgende Definition beweist: „Participant Observation is based on the theory that an interpretation of an event can only be approximately correct when it is a composite of the two points of view, the outside and the inside. Thus the view of the person who was a participant in the event, whose wishes and interests were in some way involved, and the view of the person who was not a participant but only an observer or analyst, coalesce in one final synthesis“ (John J. Hader and E. C. Lindemann 1933, S. 148).
