Abstract

What has happened to Francisco Quiacaín and his Pentecostal sisters and brothers in the village on the lakeshore? In the 1980s, they had been waiting for the Lord to rapture their Church into heaven immediately; every day they were anxious for the moment they would fly away from the turmoil of war, up and away to meet Christ for the great banquet in heaven. From a sociological point of view, they “were premillennialists” or “apocalypticists.” Using a word from Bourdieu’s toolbox, one might say that they had an “apocalyptic habitus.”
