Abstract
Multilingual needs in medical institutions and healthcare organisations are constantly on the rise, in both the public and private sectors. This chapter presents a general introduction of the findings on typical challenges and misunderstandings in intercultural patient-physician encounters and highlights advantages and disadvantages of working with ad hoc and professional interpreters. By outlining new trends in global healthcare, it shows the relevance that investigating interactions in public health holds from different perspectives (i.e. disciplines, countries) and provides brief summaries of the chapters in this anthology. The intensity of the discussion in this specific context of multilingual institutional interaction is reflected in this introduction to the volume.
