Abstract
The previous section attempted to provide a historical context for the emergence of the contemporary LIT, as proposed in this thesis. We have seen that the alienation felt by many people in the 1960s as a result of socio-political events served as a driving force for many to create alternative lifestyles and participate in modern-day long-term travel. While some researchers argue that towards the end of the 20th century this alienation from society faded due to the changing social, economic and cultural environment (Cohen, 2003), I believe that the prevailing economic, socio-political and cultural environment stimulates many people today to seek fulfilling experiences outside their comfort zone.
