Hierbei bezeichnet y(s) das Einkommen aus Erwerbstätigkeit nach s Jahren ›formaler‹ Ausbildung, y(0) das Einkommen ohne weitere Ausbildung nach der Pflichtschulzeit, und r die Ertragsrate pro Ausbildungsjahr. Mit ›formaler‹ Ausbildung ist der Besuch einer eigens für diesen Zweck geschaffenen Institution gemeint (z.B. einer Schule oder Hochschule). Üblicherweise wird angenommen, dass die Ausbildung nach der Pflichtschulzeit und vor der Aufnahme einer Erwerbstätigkeit stattfindet.
