Zusammenfassung
Seitdem Pharmakologie und Psychiatrie als moderne Zweige der Medizin anerkannt sind – das heißt, etwa seit dem letzten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts –, haben Chemiker und Ärzte, Psychologen und Psychiater, Politiker und Arzneimittelhersteller nach nicht suchterzeugenden Drogen gesucht, um Schmerzen zu stillen und Schlaf oder Wachheit herbeizuführen – natürlich vergeblich. Diese Suche basiert auf zwei Annahmen: dass Sucht ein von Drogen hervorgerufener Zustand sei und dass manche Drogen mehr und andere weniger „suchterzeugend“ seien. Diese Auffassung ist kennzeichnend für die Verwirrung, die hinsichtlich der pharmakologischen Wirkung von Drogen und ihres praktischen Gebrauchs herrscht.
