Abhängig von seiner individuellen Gestaltung kann der ausgegebene Token verschiedene Funktionen erfüllen. Zum Beispiel kann der Token für einen digitalen Anteil an dem Projekt stehen und Voraussetzung dafür sein, um die Funktionen („utilities“) der (späteren) Blockchain-Plattform nutzen zu können. In diesem Fall kann ein Token bspw. einen „Coupon“ für eine konkrete Dienstleistung darstellen.
