Theoretical Framework

The list placement of candidates for European elections and thus the re-election probabilities of MEPs depend on the goals national parties pursue. This chapter provides the theoretical basis and framework for this study. First, it introduces the principal-agent framework and explains how the theoretical framework contributes to our understanding of the relationship between national parties and MEPs.
