Zusammenfassung

Wirtschaftshistorisch gesehen, sind anhaltendes Wachstum und damit einhergehende Verbesserungen der allgemeinen Lebensbedingungen relativ junge Phänomene (GALOR, 2011). Nach vielen Jahrhunderten wirtschaftlicher Stagnation sind sie sichtbarer Ausdruck einer Dynamik, die mit der im frühen 19. Jahrhundert beginnenden Industrialisierung eingesetzt hat und von den Innovationsschüben der „industriellen Revolution“ angefeuert wurde. Zwar gab es auch in früheren Jahrhunderten Produktions-, Einkommens- und Preisniveauschwankungen, doch waren dies weitgehend temporäre Abweichungen von stationären Gleichgewichten mit im langfristigen Durchschnitt konstanten Einkommen bei hoher Ungleichheit der Verteilung und verbreiteter Armut.
