Do the current financial and structural conditions in home care allow hospice and palliative care?

When asked, the majority of Austrians want to stay at home until the end. In reality most of them die in hospitals or LTC facilities. Caring for severely ill, dying, often very old persons at home requires a close and creative co-operation of patients, their families and loved ones, the professional home carers and the GP‘s. Complex conditions may require the use of additional specialised hospice and palliative care services. Professional home carers are mostly women trying hard to care for their patients and their families under very difficult conditions. A 3 year project realised by Hospice Austria in close cooperation with four home care organisations tackles problems and questions arising with the integration of hospice and palliative care in home care.
