Abstract
The guiding questions of this study are: How do university presidents in Germany lead their universities? And closely related to this rather general overarching question: Who becomes university president and why? Which steps of the career ladder need to be climbed? How are change processes in universities initiated and reforms implemented? How do university presidents evade conflict and how do they rally support? How do university presidents prevent or handle opposition and resistance? How do university presidents deal with shared governance? Which sources of power are used by university presidents during reform processes and how?
