Abstract

In the 2010s a new idea of a leftist Islam, the so-called İslami Sol, emerged in Turkey, which tried to solve problems of social inequality and distribution from an Islamic perspective and presented itself as an alternative to the political Islam of the conservative neoliberal AKP. In addition, with the emergence of the İslami Sol the cleavage between Islam and the secular and anticlerical Turkish left became narrower. In this sense, the phenomenon of the İslami Sol demonstrates the erosion of symbolic and social boundaries by social, political and economic change, resulting in a de-bordering of categories and concepts. The aim of this article is to analyze the İslami Sol idea as an example for categorical de-bordering. In this context, thearticle demonstrates that the emergence of an İslami Sol happened within a specific societal, political and economic transformation process. Consequently, the emergence of the İslami Sol in Turkey must be treated as an outcome of a genuine transformation of Turkey.
