Abstract
The second half of the 19. century and the end of the First World War was the second period of bloom of the Freemasonry. The Freemasonry reached its peak not only in Hungary but across Eastern Europe. Freemasonry flowered in the area of South-Eastern Europe, particularly on the European side of the Ottoman Empire, like the large ports of Istanbul and Smyrna as well as in the Hungarian part of the Habsburg Monarchy. During the nation building of the Balkan peoples and during the slow decline of the Ottoman Empire numerous lodges were created and the number of members rose rapidly. On the eve of the First World War, another Masonic lodge was established in the Ottoman Empire, in Smyrna. She received the patent from the Symbolic Grand Lodge of Hungary under the name of “Zoroaster”. The members were citizens of the two empires: The Ottoman Empire and the Austria-Hungary with different nationalities. The article concentrates on the following question: To what extent can the members of the Lodge “Zoroaster” be described as cross-border commuters who jumped over not only state borders but also ethnic, linguistic and social borders, by the continuous cooperation in the Lodge?
