Eine chemische Reaktion zwischen den Edukten A a , A b , usw., die die Produkte A c , A d , usw. bildet, kann in der folgenden Form beschrieben werden
Dabei bezeichnen die ν i die sog. stöchiometrischen Koeffizienten der Reaktion. Da jede chemische Reaktion grundsätzlich sowohl vorwärts als auch rückwärts ablaufen kann, kann der Reaktionspfeil in (22.1) durch ein Gleichheitszeichen ersetzt werden. Dadurch erhält man die allgemeine Form der Reaktionsgleichung
wobei die stöchiometrischen Koeffizienten konventionsgemäß für alle Edukte negativ und für alle Produkte positiv sind.
Jede chemische Reaktion strebt immer ihrem Gleichgewichtszustand entgegen, der unter der Voraussetzung erreicht wird, dass ausreichend Zeit zur Verfügung steht. Dieser Gleichgewichtszustand kann als eine Situation interpretiert werden, in der sowohl die Vorwärts‐ als auch die Rückwärtsreaktionen mit identischer Geschwindigkeit ablaufen. Dadurch wird die makroskopisch sichtbare Reaktionsrate Null und die Stoffzusammensetzung ändert sich nicht mehr. Diese Stoffzusammensetzung im Gleichgewichtszustand kann mithilfe der beiden Hauptsätze der Thermodynamik in Abhängigkeit der Randbedingungen Temperatur und Druck bestimmt werden. Dieses Vorgehen wird im Folgenden aufgezeigt.
