Zusammenfassung

Mit dem Act of Union wird Schottland im Jahre 1707 Teil des Vereinigten Königreichs. Allerdings setzen sich liberale Ideen im zutiefst calvinistisch geprägten Schottland nur allmählich gegen die starken kirchlichen Widerstände durch. Trotz der nachträglichen Verklärung dieser Epoche als ‚Schottische Aufklärung‘ ist das schottische Geistesleben jener Zeit geprägt von den Glaubensstreitigkeiten und Machtansprüchen der unterschiedlichen in Schottland vertretenen christlichen Konfessionen: Church (Kirk) of Scotland, Scottish Episcopal Church und Katholizismus.
