Die komparative Medienforschung erlebte im letzten Jahrzehnt einen Boom, hat jedoch noch nicht ein fortschrittenes Entwicklungsstadium erreicht. Die vergleichende Erforschung von Mediensystemen steht „noch in ihren Anfängen“ (Kleinsteuber, 2002, S. 43) und ist „ausbaufähig“ (Melischek und Seethaler et al., 2008, S. 13).
