Ethnografie und Teilnehmende Beobachtung

Zusammenfassung

Die Ethnografie fahndet nach Wegen und Methoden, um gelebte und praktizierte Sozialität sowie lokales Wissen empirisch zu untersuchen. Sowohl in der eigenen Gesellschaft als auch in fremdkulturellen Kontexten erforschen EthnografInnen Subkulturen, Organisationen oder Institutionen. Dieser Artikel führt in die Ethnografie als einen Forschungsansatz ein, der durch die Prinzipien der Iterativität, Gegenstandsangemessenheit und die Methode der teilnehmenden Beobachtung gekennzeichnet ist. Neben konkreten Hinweisen, wie ethnografische Forschung methodisch durchgeführt werden kann, geben wir einen Überblick zu theoretischen und methodologischen Strömungen der Ethnografie und ethnografischer Forschung in der Politikwissenschaft.

    Mit lokalem Wissen meinen wir situatives Wissen; der Begriff ist hier also nicht im Sinne des Gegensatzes von „global“ und „lokal“ zu verstehen.

    Spätestens mit Marcus’ (1995) Artikel zur „multi-sited ethnography“ ist in der Ethnographie eine Debatte entbrannt, ob in der gegenwärtigen Phase der Globalisierung eine Fokussierung auf Orte, d. h. Lokalitäten noch gegenstandsangemessen ist (Pachirat 2017, S. 27–29; Marcus 1995; Burawoy 2000). Viele gegenwärtige Ethnographien wenden sich globalisierten Prozessen und Phänomenen zu, die nicht an einem Ort lokalisierbar sind (Autessere 2014; Horst 2006).

    Während in Deutschland der Begriff der „Ethnologie“ am geläufigsten ist, setzte sich in den USA „Kulturanthropologie“ und in Frankreich und Großbritannien „Sozialanthropologie“ als Bezeichnung für die Disziplinen durch, die fremde Kulturen beforschen.

    Dies sollte nicht zu dem Schluss führen, dass Menschen unreflektiert seien, doch erfordert Reflexion eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit und Anstrengung (Berger und Luckmann 1980).

    Roos und Franke plädieren in diesem Band jedoch dafür, die Kriterien der Reliabilität, Repräsentativität, und Validität auch auf interpretative Forschung anzuwenden und um das Kriterium der Muße zu ergänzen. Dieser Position folgen wir nicht.

    Natürlich kann ein übertriebenes Beharren auf überbrachten Standards der Ethnographie, was z. B. Länge des Feldaufenthalts betrifft, in ein (selbst auferlegtes) „Polizieren“ der disziplinären Grenzen münden (Yanow 2009, S. 33). Wir möchten aber darauf hinweisen, dass die Benennung z. B. einer um gelegentliche Beobachtungen ergänzten Interviewstudie als Ethnografie nicht im Sinne der jeweiligen VerfasserIn sein kann, da eine so benannte Studie riskiert, von der wissenschaftlichen Community an anderen Qualitäts-Standards gemessen zu werden.

    Auch aufgrund der Vorgaben von Verlagen wird in vielen der hier zitierten Studien die methodische Vorgehensweise nicht ausführlich dargestellt. Wir werden daher in Teil 4 Beispiele aus der Soziologie nutzen, um methodische Feinheiten besser herausarbeiten zu können.
