Abstract

Aspects specific to German SMEs (the Mittelstand) are described from a historic, cultural, and quantitative perspective, as well as the particular demands such special requirements situations place on the coaching intervention and the profile of an appropriate coach. Brief descriptions of three very different real-life case scenarios serve to illustrate these points. These case scenarios each represent diverse aspects that are typical for German SMEs. Correspondingly, the coaching intervention also shows considerable variation. The analysis of the case scenarios result in generalized suggestions for methodological approaches that work towards a corresponding long-term solution. Particular emphasis is placed on six factors that are indispensable for success in the intervention that is coaching in SMEs, with the primary target categories of survival, disencumbrance, professionalization, and growth.
