Die disruptive Innovation des Cloud Computings etabliert sich als Substitut der Beschaffung und Nutzung von Informationstechnologie (IT). Unternehmen sind jetzt nicht mehr an investitionsintensive IT-Ressourcen gebunden oder müssen Implementierungs- und Wartungsaufwände selbst aufbringen. Sie beziehen IT-Dienstleitungen als Cloud Computing über das Internet und von mehreren Lieferanten. Vor allem das Liefermodell des Public Cloud Computing steht für kapazitativ unlimitierte und bedarfsgerecht skalierfähige IT (Mell & Grance 2009, McAfee 2011).
