Zusammenfassung

Das Ende seiner Regierungszeit gab Matteo Renzi auf einer Pressekonferenz kurz nach Mitternacht am 05. Dezember 2016 bekannt. Am Tag zuvor war das von seiner Regierung initiierte Verfassungsreferendum gescheitert, in dem es u. a. darum ging, die Befugnisse der zweiten Parlamentskammer zu schwächen und die Macht des Ministerpräsidenten zu stärken. Renzi selbst hatte das Referendum zu einer Art Vertrauensfrage über seine Regierung aufgebaut und genau in diesem Sinn hatten es viele Wähler auch verstanden.
