Aufklärung ist das Fragen nach Begründungen. Sokrates, der philosophische Aufklärer gegen die griechische Sophistik, sprach vom logon didonai, das lateinisch mit rationem reddere, Gründe angeben, übersetzt wurde. Ratio ist in der lateinischen Begriffssprache nicht nur die Vernunft bzw. in neueren Auslegungen der Verstand, sondern auch der Grund.
