In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich die Rolle des iranischen Energiesektors bedeutend verändert. Die Veränderungen können zunächst anhand einer Statistik verdeutlicht werden. In den 1970er‐Jahren exportierte Iran über 90 Prozent seiner gesamten Erdöl‐ und Erdgasproduktion, während weniger als zehn Prozent im Inland genutzt wurden.
