Abstract
This thesis was motivated by the growing importance of software platforms for the software industry, arising novel governance challenges for platform providers and our limited understanding in IS research regarding control modes on software platforms. The purpose of this thesis was to understand how and why different control modes on software platforms affect third-party developers and how the exercise of promising control modes may be facilitated. In this regard, three studies were conducted, published across four scientific articles, which investigated control modes on software platforms with different foci and methodological approaches.
