Abstract

In recent years, a number of large emerging economies have experienced rapid economic growth, emerging as important pillars of the global economy. At the same time, some of these countries are becoming important centers of global research and development (R&D) and innovation activities. Evidence such as increasing numbers of patent filings in emerging markets suggests that the geographic locus of innovation is gradually shifting from the traditional, advanced economy centers of innovation towards less developed economies (Bruche, 2009; von Zedtwitz, 2004).
