Abstract
Although numerous studies provide initial evidence for the existence of strategic groups in the context of higher education, most of what has been written about strategic groups in higher education does not focus on the individual school’s goals and primary strategic approach. It has been pointed out that mission statements are commonly developed to reflect an institution’s strategic approach. While critics hold that many institutions of higher education develop mission statements for reasons of legitimacy, supporters purport that similarity and differences in the content of institutional mission statements are able to deliver major implications for an institution’s primary strategic approach.
