This study set out to determine the extent to which EU citizens are visible in the European public sphere. This question has been neglected by previous research, but is highly relevant for accountability, responsiveness and the overall legitimacy of EU governance. When interested in the visibility of EU citizens in the European public sphere, it is important to first understand the relevance of the concept of citizenship for democratic governance.
