Abstract
Temperature Programmed Desorption requires the even adsorption of gas on the sample, while on surfaces next to the sample, e.g. the sample holder frame and the heating wires, as little gas as possible should adsorb. Hence the ideal intensity profile of the Molecular Beam on the sample is a top-hat profile, as shown in Fig. 4.1. The MB should have a constant core intensity over an area with diameter 3.5 mm, a size suitable for most of the samples to be used in the MRS. Outside of the core area the intensity should abruptly drop to zero.
