Why is it important to analyse the notion of responsibility in the context of science and technology (S&T) governance? In recent decades, the notion of responsibility has gained prominence in policy making and research alike. Its diffusion can be seen as a response to the widespread acknowledgement that S&T present specific and urgent challenges to our capacity to govern their effects. This acknowledgement has led to the search for new governance solutions, which can more effectively steer the direction of scientific and technology development towards socially desirable ends.
