Dichte und Urbanitat werden als zentrale Eigenschaften der Metropole angesehen. In dem Buch Delirious New York, A retroactive Manifesto for Manhatten (1978), setzt sich Rem Koolhaas mit diesem Thema auseinander. Dabei fokussiert er auf die Architektur des fruhen 20. Jahrhunderts und versucht das Grosstadtische der Metropole zu erfassen. In dem folgenden Beitrag wird in diesem Zusammenhang Koolhaas’ Konzept der culture of congestion vorgestellt.
