Zusammenfassung
Die Aufführung des Radiohörspiels The War of the Worlds von Orson Welles an Halloween 1938 löste angeblich unter der Zuhörern eine Massenpanik aus, da die dort dargestellte Invasion der Marsmenschen oftmals nicht als Fiktion, sondern als Live-Reportage interpretiert wurde. Die im Jahr 1940 von Hadley Cantril, Hazel Gaudet und Herta Herzog veröffentlichte Studie The Invasion from Mars widmet sich diesem Phänomen. In der Kommunikationswissenschaft oftmals unreflektiert als wissenschaftlicher Beweis für die angeblich starken Medienwirkungen ins Feld geführt, wirft die Studie jedoch ein differenziertes Licht auf die Ereignisse. Dabei ist das Vorgehen der Autoren um Hadley Cantril allerdings selbst methodisch wie theoretisch strittig. Der Beitrag gibt daher Auskunft über den Inhalt und die Wirkungsgeschichte der Studie sowie die persönlichen wie organisationalen Kontexte, in denen sie entstanden ist und ordnet die Ergebnisse vor dem Hintergrund der gegenwärtigen fachlichen Positionen neu ein.
