Zusammenfassung

Kleinstaaten sind in nahezu allen Regionen der Welt verstreut. Sowohl in der Karibik als auch im Pazifik verdichtet sich jedoch das Aufkommen von Mikrostaaten: Die geografischen Bedingungen haben zu einer langen kolonialen Besiedlungsgeschichte der dortigen Inselgruppen geführt. Die Inselformationen begünstigten die Entwicklung einzelner administrativer Räume unter teilweise konkurrierender Kolonialherrschaft. Relativ unabhängig voneinander haben sich einzelne Inseln bzw. Inselgruppen so zu sehr unterschiedlichen Mikrostaaten entwickeln können. Heute sind die meisten karibischen Inseln souveräne Staaten im Sinne des internationalen Rechts. Trotzdem stehen sie immer noch unter dem Einfluss regionaler und internationaler Großmächte.
