Da Innovationen immer häufiger auf Geschäftsmodellebene stattfinden, ergibt sich die Notwendigkeit strategisches Orientierungswissen auch in diesem Bereich anzusammeln und zur systematischen Vorausschau zu nutzen. Geschäftsprozesspatente können im Gegensatz zu technischen Patenten Aufschluss über Geschäftsmodellentwicklungen geben, und somit als Informationsquelle für das Corporate Foresight dienen.
