Der für die New Economic Sociology wohl einflussreichste Ansatz aus dem Theoriecluster des Neo-Institutionalismus stammt von Neil Fligstein. Fligsteins Leistungen umfassen eine allgemeine Marktsoziologie, die das Desiderat eines „systematic attempt to characterize the social relations within markets generally“ in der Soziologie beheben soll (2002a, S. 14). Er bezeichnet seinen Ansatz als politisch-kulturelle Marktsoziologie, die auf einer Theorie sozialer Felder beruht und einen „unified framework“ bereitstellen soll, „with which to understand the key dynamics of the sociology of markets in industrialized societies“ (Fligstein 2002a, S. 20).
