Zusammenfassung
In the last two decades migration research has experienced a significant boom that entailed the criticism of established categories and a pluralisation of theoretical and methodological approaches. Within this context a broader theoretical shift towards a decentering of migration studies can be observed. By decentering I understand the tendency towards focus less exclusively on migrants and ‚ethnic others‘ and more inclusively on mainstream social actors and institutions. The tendency towards decentering can be identified in a variety of recent theoretical approaches of migration studies. I will exemplify it by presenting insights from my ethnographic research on transnational Ghanaian migrants and on youth welfare practice in a diverse German city. As is empirically shown, the meta-theoretical figure of decentering facilitates a reflexive epistemological stance that allows for relating different methodological perspectives on migration processes and a variety of objects of study. Instead of leading to a coherent theoretical approach to migration, it facilitates modes of integrating a theoretical and methodological pluralism which is equipped to approach the increased complexity and diversity of migration-related phenomena.
