Abstract
The present article outlines the importance of ‘work’ as a construct in organizational science and examines the unit of analysis of its exploration. Work is characterized as a complex phenomenon with outstanding significance for both a society and the individual. The organization constitutes the mediating instance between the working individuals and the social practice of work. In order to consider the constituent characteristics of work in an integrative way, we suggest looking at ‘work’ from the perspective of the cultural-historical activity theory. The concepts of culturally-historically mediated actions, the macrostructure of action, and the activity system provide tools for a situated, contextual description of work activity. The object of the activity (motive), through which the individual, organizational and social facet of work can be grasped, plays a key role in this context. The present article sets an activity theoretical framework for the analysis of work and illustrates its application using the example of a sample company. On this basis, implications for organizational research are discussed. They relate to the unit of analysis of work and emphasize the cross-level importance as well as the collective and cross-border character of work.
