Zusammenfassung

Wann immer zeitgenössische Islamisten über ihre Herkunft nachdenken, beleben unweigerlich zwei Schlüsselfiguren ihre Vorstellungen. Diese beiden Bezugspunkte des modernen politischen Islam sind Sayyid Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani (bzw. Asadabadi) (1838/39-1897) und sein Schüler Mohammad Abduh (1849-1905). Al-Afghani und Abduh lebten in einer für die islamische Gemeinschaft (ummah) turbulenten Zeit. Beide versuchten theoretisch wie praktisch, deren Niedergang als organisiertes politisches Gebilde zu verhindern. Sie kämpften jedoch gegen das Unausweichliche und lebten nicht lange genug, um Zeugen der Abschaffung des Kalifats in der Türkei im Jahr 1924 zu werden.
