Further improvement potentials for heavy-duty diesel engines with ultra high injection pressure under transient operation

Abstract

Fulfilling the Stage IV and Euro VI emission legislation has been a significant challenge for heavy duty diesel engine makers and their suppliers. As shown in Figure 1 NOx tailpipe emissions had to be reduced by 80%. Additionally to that the particulate emissions for truck engines had to be reduced by 50% combined with a new introduced particulate number limitation. Industrial and off-road engines are basically following this technology trend.

Zusammenfassung

Die Erfüllung der Emissionsgrenzwerte hat in den letzten Jahren die Rahmenbedingungen für die Auslegung von Nutzfahrzeugmotoren vorgegeben. Neue Motoren wurden entwickelt, die zusätzlich zu den Emissionsanforderungen auch noch hohe spezifische Leistungen möglich gemacht haben. Die thermische Belastung und auch die Spitzendrücke der Motoren sind kontinuierlich gestiegen.

Der zukünftige Fokus auf weitere signifikante Kraftstoffverbrauchsreduktion, wird, neben weiterer Optimierung der Grundmotoren, eine gesamtheitliche Betrachtung der Antriebsarchitektur unter Einbeziehung der Motor und Getriebekonzepte erfordern.
