Abstract

In this dissertation, culture-related behaviors are integrated into the behavioral models of virtual characters. The conceptual design and technical realization carried out for this purpose are further described in this chapter.

Integrating culture into the behavioral models of virtual characters is a challenging task. Starting from the classical distinction between “what to say" and “how to say it" in natural language generation (see, for example, the survey given by Bateman and Zock [BZ03]), we need to adapt not only the content of a character’s utterances to a particular culture, but also their form.
