Abstract

When the air/fuel mixture is burned, the main byproducts include pollutants such as NOx, soot, CO, and HC. The amount of these pollutants contained in the untreated exhaust gas (exhaust gas after combustion before exhaust-gas treatment) mainly depends on engine operating conditions. Besides combustion-chamber shape and airflow path (supercharging/turbocharging, exhaust- gas recirculation, whirl control), the fuel-injection system plays a key role in minimizing emissions.
