Zusammenfassung

Moderne Nationalstaaten in Europa stehen vor einer Vielzahl von Herausforderungen, die ihre traditionelle Position in der Bereitstellung öffentlicher Güter in Frage stellen. Einige Analysten sehen sie auf dem Rückzug, verdrängt durch nichtstaatliche Akteure wie multinationale Unternehmen auf der einen Seite und supranationale Organisationen auf der anderen. Andere sehen ihre Rolle als traditionelle Träger der Souveränität trotz geringfügiger Anpassungen im Wesentlichen unverändert.
