Zusammenfassung
Damit ist es Zeit, Bilanz zu ziehen und die Merkmale der soziologischen Gruppe der NYI zusammenfassend darzustellen. Diese Gemeinsamkeiten gehen auf den politischen Impuls ihrer sozialistischen Jugend zurück, wie auch der gleichlautende Titel von Glazers (1990) und Lipsets (1981) Rückblicken „Vom Sozialismus zur Soziologie“ andeutet. Deshalb ist das nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg neu geschaffene Feld der politischen Soziologie für sie kongenial, da sie dort ihre Interessen am besten einbringen können. Sie verstehen sich daher auch nicht als reine Akademiker, sondern als Intellektuelle, die auf die breite interessierte Öffentlichkeit wirken wollen. Dies ist ein Grund dafür, dass die Mitglieder des Kreises zum Teil nur einen marginalen Status innerhalb der akademischen Soziologie innehaben, wie sich z.B. bei der Berufung Bells an die Harvard- Universität zeigt.
