Zusammenfassung

Barth hat keine im engeren Sinn der Migrationsforschung zuzurechnenden Arbeiten vorgelegt, aber seine Arbeiten sind für das Thema kollektiver Identität maßgeblich. Für die Analyse migrationsgesellschaftlicher Phänomene sind sie vor allem im Hinblick auf Fragen von Inklusion und Exklusion relevant. Statt Kulturen als primordiale Essenzen aufzufassen, betont er die soziale Konstruktion kultureller Grenzen.

    Solche antagonistischen Konstellationen bergen die Gefahr immer größerer Konfrontation („komplementäre Schismogenese“, Bateson 1985, S. 105–106).

    Diese Frage kann hier nicht diskutiert werden. Eine Antwort würde eine präzise Klärung des Begriffs „Kollektiv“ und der Varianten von Kollektiven erfordern. Der m. E. differenzierteste Ansatz hierzu ist die Arbeit von Hansen 2009.

    Empirisch hat das z. B. Sandra Wallmann gezeigt, die Barths Ideen der Grenzen-Bildung und auch der generativen Struktur für die Untersuchung von migrantischer Identität in zwei Londoner Vierteln nutzte. Dabei verdeutlicht sie, dass es bei Identität nicht um die Grenze geht, sondern um die Grenz(ziehungs)prozesse. Gleichzeitig zeigte sie, dass Barths Annahme rationalen Entscheidens die Grenzen nur ansatzweise erklären kann (vgl. Wallman 1986, S. 232). Harrison arbeitet heraus, dass ethnische Grenzen verunklärt und von anderen angeeignet werden kann und zeigt an Beispielen, dass Identität eine begrenzte Ressource sein kann (vgl. Harrison 1999, S. 12–13).

    Nur aus Gründen der Zeichenbegrenzung gehe ich hier nicht auf Trends und Grenzen des Konstruierens ein, die den Akteuren durch evolutionär gewordene kognitive, motivationale und emotive Tendenzen nahegelegt werden (Van den Berghe 1997; Berreby 2005).
