Wie die Sozialwissenschaften hat auch die Klimaforschung laut Steven Vanderheiden (2008) das Potential, Kritik zu äußern und nicht nur deskriptiv zu arbeiten. Tatsächlich gibt es mehrere Klimawissenschaftler, die dies tun und zu Aktivisten in der internationalen Klimabewegung geworden sind. Zu ihnen zählen James Hansen, der Direktor des „Goddard Institute of Space Studies“ der NASA sowie David Karoly von der Universität Melbourne.
