Das Europäische Zentrum für Kernforschung CERN wurde 1954 von 11 westeuropäischen Staaten in Genf gegründet. Es hat sich seitdem zu einer der erfolgreichsten Institutionen der Grundlagenforschung und zum Mekka der Teilchenphysiker aus aller Welt entwickelt.
