Abstract

The first chapter showed that the results of the Government Survey have been the source of official justification for retaining the death penalty in Japan. This chapter shows that existing survey evidence about Japanese public attitudes to the death penalty cannot be taken at face value. The chapter provides a critical evaluation of the Government Survey. It then assesses the quality of the Survey, and examines whether it yields scientifically valid evidence.
