Zusammenfassung
Mit Blick auf eine zunehmende Orientierung am investiven Sozialstaat wird im Beitrag untersucht, ob und welche Zusammenhänge zwischen Bildungs- und materiellen Ungleichheiten sowie zwischen Chancen- und Ergebnisungleichheit im Bildungssystem bestehen. Dazu werden unter Rückgriff auf die funktionalistische Modernisierungstheorie, den Kredentialismus sowie arbeitsmarkt- und wohlfahrtsstaatstheoretische Überlegungen unterschiedliche Hypothesen abgeleitet. Die Ergebnisse eines Ländervergleichs legen nahe, dass Bildung als „Gleichheitsmacher“ nicht überschätzt und eine investive Sozialpolitik nicht auf „education only politics“ verengt werden darf. Eine direkte Umverteilung reduziert deutlich stärker als Bildung die Armut in entwickelten Gesellschaften. Gleichwohl hat auch die Verringerung von Bildungsarmut (als eine Dimension von Ungleichheiten in den Bildungsergebnissen) einen positiven Einfluss auf das Niveau materieller Ungleichheiten.
