Since it might take days, weeks, months, or years for the biological SOM processes in neural realms to form or alter neural maps, the organizing effects are not immediately measurable and may be disguised by other, stronger changes in short-term signal activities. Changes in the m i and their effects on signal transmission occur gradually, probably only intermittently during short periods of “learning” when some specific plasticity-control factor is on.
