Zusammenfassung
Im Mittel entfallen 10–14% der Körpermasse eines gesunden Erwachsenen auf das subkutane Fettgewebe; jedoch zeigt der relative Masseanteil der Subkutis ausgeprägte interindividuelle Unterschiede, die von Ernährung, Geschlecht, Alter, familiärer Disposition und Rasse abhängig sind. Die wichtigsten Funktionen des unter der Haut gelagerten Fettgewebes sind mechanische Schutzfunktion, Thermoregulation sowie Speicherung und Freisetzung von Energieträgern. Das Körperfett enthält ca. 80% der Energiereserven des Körpers, wobei sein hoher Energiegehalt vor allem auf dem geringen Sauerstoffanteil im Molekül sowie der Ablagerung als wasserfreies Neutralfett beruht. Das Fett wird in den Adipozyten entweder direkt aus Kohlenhydraten synthetisiert oder durch Pinozytose aus dem Extrazellularraum aufgenommen. Während der Embryogenese werden die Lipoblasten um die 14. Schwangerschaftswoche angelegt. In frühen Stadien der Differenzierung sind diese Zellen noch fähig, sich auch zu anderen mesenchymalen Zellen zu entwickeln. Nach abgeschlossener Differenzierung bleibt jedoch die Zahl der Adipozyten im Körper wahrscheinlich zeitlebens konstant.
