Abstract
This is a ferocious variety of acne with a typical set of clinical and laboratory findings, previously described under several designations such as acute febrile ulcerative conglobate acne with polyarthralgia, acute febrile ulcerative conglobate acne with leukemoid reaction, or acne maligna. It was renamed acne fulminans by us. Acne fulminans is an unforgettable disease. Once seen, it is instantly recognized. The uninitiated physician would regard it as horrendous acne conglobata. Earlier writers have done just that. It is important to avoid this error, for acne fulminans is more menacing to health, is not responsive to antibiotics, and must be treated in quite a different way.
