Abstract
The immunosuppressed child with cancer is constantly at risk for infectious disease. The extent of susceptibility is dependent upon the integrity of the various components of the immune system and the virulence and number of microbes to which the individual is exposed. The type and stage of the malignancy, extent of anticancer and antimicrobial therapy, frequency of exposure to infectious agents, duration of hospitalization and nutritional status of the host determine the risk for infection.
